Totally understand, but the underlying principles are the same whether we’re talking about a virtual economy or the real world. As I mentioned when this was last discussed, if a currency has no value, then it provides no motivation or incentive.

If everything is free, included, or available in unlimited supply, the system quickly loses its purpose. It’s similar to playing a video game with 20 levels, but being allowed to skip straight to the final reward at any time. The challenge and progression disappear, and with them, the motivation to keep playing.

While not every member is driven purely by rewards, the majority are, and if there’s no sense of scarcity, achievement, or progression, boredom sets in fast.
